Cesare Vecellio, a relative of the famous Venetian painter Titian, was an author, painter and achieved wood engraver. He was born in Pieve di Cadore, in the mountainous Belluno region north of Venice, between 1521 and 1531, and died in Venice in 1601. Although he never gained the prominence that Titian did as a painter, he did become well-known for his authorship of two early-printed works related to costume: De gli habiti antichi et moderni di diverse parti del mondo in 1590 and its augmented edition Habiti antichi et moderni di tutto il Mondo in 1598, and a collection of lace pattern illustrations, Corona delle nobili et virtuose donne in 1591. Vecellio.net is a space that gathers all kinds of information about Cesare Vecellio and his works. It is also intended as an environment in which those who are interested in Vecellio, costume books or related areas can share information. My goal is to make this site the definitive source for Vecellio on the Web. PLEASE NOTE: This site does not deal with Vecellio family genealogy. For that, you might try: D'Addezio.com: the Italian Heritage and Genealogy Home Page, ItalianGenealogy.com or Italiamia.com. I put it together for totally selfish reasons. Vecellio.net is really the intersection of my two interests - art history and librarianship/information science. I focused on Cesare Vecellio's Habiti antichi et moderni di tutto il Mondo (1598) for my Master's Thesis in Art History. I had originally intended to be a special collections/ rare book librarian. For my MLIS, I ended up focusing on a variety of areas: book history, information organization, user needs and Web design. I am currently the Librarian of the Seattle Art Museum. Although we have a small rare book collection in my library, dealing with special collections is in no way the focus of my job. This site allows me to continue studying Vecellio and his works. What should you do if you have information you think would be relevant to the site? As stated above, the goal of this site is to gather information and create an interactive/shared knowledge environment. If you have any suggestions, papers, events, related sites, etc. that you think are interesting, you are encouraged to send them to me. Please send an e-mail to traci.timmons@comcast.net. I look forward to hearing from you! What are the terms of use for this site? Please cite "vecellio.net" as the source when documenting any information from these pages.
